Largemouth Bass

Micropterus nigricans

bass
  • The jaw extends well past the back edge of the eye — if you draw an imaginary line straight down from the rear of the eye, the jaw reaches beyond it.
  • It is the largest of the black bass species, capable of reaching nearly 30 inches in length and over 25 pounds.
  • Look for a greenish body coloration — this fish is sometimes called 'green bass' or 'green trout' for its distinctive green hue.
  • It is a ray-finned fish with the typical sunfish family body shape — deep, compressed body that helps separate it from other freshwater species.
