The jaw extends well past the back edge of the eye — if you draw an imaginary line straight down from the rear of the eye, the jaw reaches beyond it.
It is the largest of the black bass species, capable of reaching nearly 30 inches in length and over 25 pounds.
Look for a greenish body coloration — this fish is sometimes called 'green bass' or 'green trout' for its distinctive green hue.
It is a ray-finned fish with the typical sunfish family body shape — deep, compressed body that helps separate it from other freshwater species.
